How to read this timeline
- A solid bar
- The working days an item is scheduled to occupy, from its earliest start to its earliest finish.
- An outlined bar
- A rollup. Its span is the span of everything nested beneath it, not work of its own.
- A diamond, marking a milestone
- A dated marker with no duration, no effort and no cost. It either happened on its date or it did not.
- Marked critical
- The chain of work with no spare days, shown by a dashed leading edge and by the word critical in the label. A day lost anywhere on it is a day lost on the finish date.
- The vertical rust line
- Today. Bars finishing to its left should be done.
- Float
- Spare working days an item can slip before it moves the project finish. Zero float means it is on the critical path.
- Negative float
- Less time available than the work needs to meet an imposed finish. The shortfall is shown in working days rather than quietly absorbed by relaxing the constraint.
